Homemade Mozzarella Sticks

Ingredients:

  • Oil for frying
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 12 mozzarella cheese sticks

Instructions:

  1. Prepare for Frying:
    • Pour 2-3 inches of oil into a deep pan or pot. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 265°F (130°C).
  2. Set Up Dredging Stations:
    • In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and pepper.
    • In another shallow bowl, whisk the eggs with the water until well combined.
    • Place the Italian breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl.
  3. Coat the Cheese Sticks:
    • Take each mozzarella stick and first coat it in the flour mixture, ensuring it’s fully covered.
    • Dip the flour-coated cheese stick into the egg mixture, letting any excess drip off.
    • Finally, roll the cheese stick in the breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to ensure the crumbs stick well. Place the breaded cheese sticks on a plate or cooling rack.
  4. Frying:
    • Once the oil is hot, carefully fry the mozzarella sticks in batches of 3-4 to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry each batch for 2-3 minutes or until they are light golden brown and crispy.
  5. Cooling and Serving:
    • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried mozzarella sticks onto a cooling rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
    • Serve the mozzarella sticks warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
