Texas Sheet Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Cake Batter:
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 heaping tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 1/2 tbsp buttermilk
- 1/4 cup hot water (from tap)
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
For the Frosting:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 1/2 tbsp milk or whipping cream (buttermilk can also be used)
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cake Batter:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9 x 7-inch baking pan.
- In a small mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
- In a small saucepan, heat the butter, cocoa powder, and hot water over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the mixture begins to boil.
- Pour the hot cocoa mixture over the dry ingredients and stir to combine.
- Mix in the egg yolk, buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
- Bake the Cake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
- Prepare the Frosting:
- As soon as the cake is out of the oven, start the frosting.
- In the same small saucepan, combine the butter, milk (or cream), cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. Heat over low heat, stirring until the butter melts and the ingredients are fully combined. Keep the mixture thin and avoid letting it boil.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Finish the Cake:
- Pour the hot frosting over the hot cake immediately after removing it from the oven.
- Spread the frosting evenly to cover the entire surface of the cake.
