Savory Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- ¼ cup bread crumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp seasoned salt, plus more for gravy
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ⅛ tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp cooking sherry
Instructions:
- Prepare the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Shape the mixture into 8 equal-sized balls, then flatten each ball into a patty.
- Cook the Patties: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the patties and sliced onions in the skillet, and cook for about 4 minutes on each side or until the patties are well browned. Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a warm plate. Keep the onions in the skillet.
- Make the Gravy: With the onions still in the skillet, sprinkle the flour over them, stirring continuously. Use a fork to help scrape any beef bits from the bottom of the skillet, incorporating them into the mixture. Slowly pour in the beef broth and cooking sherry, stirring well to combine. Season the gravy with a bit more seasoned salt, to taste. Allow the gravy to simmer over medium-low heat, stirring regularly, until it thickens, which should take about 5 minutes.
- Simmer the Patties in Gravy: Reduce the heat to low. Return the beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the thickened gravy. Cover the skillet and let the patties simmer gently in the gravy for about 15 minutes to ensure they’re cooked through and tender.
Serve these hearty hamburger steaks smothered in rich onion gravy straight from the skillet. Perfect when paired with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite steamed vegetables for a comforting and satisfying meal any day of the week.
