Homemade Churros Recipe

Ingredients

Churro Dough:

  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon (13g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (141g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sugar Coating: In a shallow bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon. Set aside for later use.
  2. Heat the Oil: Fill a large pot or deep skillet with about 1 1/2 inches of vegetable oil. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 360°F (182°C). Monitor and adjust the heat as necessary to maintain the oil temperature.
  3. Make Churro Dough: In a large saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, add flour all at once, and stir vigorously with a rubber spatula. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture forms a ball and appears smooth. It’s okay if there are a few small lumps.
  4. Cool Dough: Transfer the dough to a large mixing bowl. Allow it to cool for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add Egg and Vanilla: Stir vanilla into the cooled dough. Add the egg and use an electric mixer to blend it into the dough. Initially, the mixture might seem to separate, but continue mixing until it becomes smooth and well combined.
  6. Pipe Churros: Spoon the dough into a 16-inch piping bag fitted with a rounded star tip, ideally no larger than 1/2 inch in diameter. Carefully pipe the dough directly into the hot oil, cutting it into 6-inch lengths with clean scissors.
  7. Fry Churros: Fry the churros until they’re golden brown and crispy, about 2 minutes per side. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding, frying no more than 5 churros at a time.
  8. Coat Churros: Briefly drain the fried churros on paper towels, then roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until evenly coated.
  9. Serving: Serve the churros warm, accompanied by chocolate ganache or caramel sauce for dipping, if desired.

Enjoy crafting these delightful homemade churros, perfect for a sweet treat or a special dessert. Their crispy exterior and soft interior, combined with the aromatic cinnamon-sugar coating, make them irresistibly delicious.
